Harnessing New Media for Community Bonding Workshops

13 December 2008
CPF Building

Carin and I were appointed as PA's New Media Champion. To prepare ourselves for the tasks, we attended the workshops conducted by Avantus. The workshops were Graphics Editing & Interactive Tools and Multimedia & Podcasting.

In Graphics Editing & Interactive Tools, we learnt how we could use Windows Live Photo Gallery to do some basic editing on event photographs. To further edit photos, we used the freeware GIMP.

In Multimedia & Podcasting, the trainer taught us Microsoft Movie Maker to create videos. As I had previously used that software and other more advanced software, I spent most of my time assisting the person sitting beside me.

eDLink Singapore - Unethical Way of Driving Web Traffic to Site

I received this email in my inbox and felt weird about it.

I didn't register for such a service in the first place. My first thought was "Did anyone sign this up for me?"

Immediately, I attempted to log in at the website. However, fortunately or unfortunately, the given username and password didn't work.
A try at resetting the password shows that the username is not found.

Uh Huh! Another spamming email to drive traffic to its site! The email by eDLink Singapore mimicked a registration confirmation email so that it gets readers of such emails to log on to its website to check it out. According to the spam law in Singapore, all advertising emails/SMS would need to include a in its message title. So eDLink Singapore literally found such a loophole to gain traffic for itself.

I thought such unethical approach by eDLink Singapore would definitely be detrimental to its image.

MoneyPS members are interested in finance, property, and investments at the personal level, the family level, and also, the business level. Members are able to network and cross-sell their products and services through our meetings and soon, worldwide, through our upcoming web portal. Purchasers of the MoneyPS book automatically become members of the club. We also raise funds for charities including the Willing Hearts Foundation and Unicef through the sales of the book. Currently, we have over 7000 members, and 120 active members in Singapore of varying professions, experiences and backgrounds."

The Programme:

MoneyPS is founded by Lance Frederick Shaw, an Australian residing in Singapore. Lance presented the programme to the audience.

Purchase a book "Thrifty and Drifty", which is a colouring book with simplified finance and investment information. Even kids can read this book. Price = 20 Euro. Once a member, you can purchase the book at a lower price and resell it to referrals.

After book purchase, you may choose to invest a sum of money with MoneyPS, minimum S$1000. The programme guarantees a minimum interest rate of 3% per month even though it had reached 17% in some months. The investments are managed by traders. Therefore, you typically do not need to do anything with it.

There is also a MLM feature in this programme. For your direct referrals, you can earn a commission value equal to 50% of interests earned from the referral. For the second level and third level, you can earn 10% of interests.

Other than profits from investment, MoneyPS is also capitalising on the vast database of customers to derive an additional income. This is possible because customers have to indicate that they permit the company to use their information before they could purchase the book online.

How to start?
1. Log on to and buy a book with Referral ID: 8919
2. You will receive your own ID via an email from the Administrators.

For investments,
You would need to sign a loan agreement with Lance Shaw, with him promising to return you 3% returns monthly. Upon signing the agreement, you will have a 7-day cooling period.

Fighting the invisible enemy

People always say that the Internet has got its good use, but it certainly can be a dangerous zone too. While I always attempt to make use of the Internet and see it as an opportunity in itself, I cannot deny the ugly side of it. This entry is inspired by a forumer nicknamed kajunteo.

Not too long ago, there was a dispute in the HardwareZone forums regarding a service-related issue. The victims profiles were then revealed by the culprit. That certainly caused an uproar in the forum community.

At the forum where I frequent, there was this forumer who posted the happenings of the other forum, so as to create awareness of the issue as well as to safeguard others. The forumer highlighted important points in the forum and his input, I believe, has benefited many forum members.

After a few days, another forumer came in, and started to debate with him. The new forumer's posts were accompanied by a few other newly registered forum members. Plainly, there was an invisible enemy taking up mulitple identities that is launching an aggressive assault. While I tried to post independent views, I was also being attacked.

The issue however did not come to an end. It just came to a halt as the forum is now shut down. The Internet provides a very good platform for communication. However, it can also turn into a good boxing arena. And if you are not careful, you may be boxed several times in several directions by fists you can't see.
